BUYING ORGANIC

As I have mentioned, I buy organic and locally whenever possible. It’s not only a good way to reduce your exposure to pesticides but also a boon to the planet we live on. That means my first choice when shopping for produce is a local farmers’ market that carries fruits and vegetables from local farms that maintain a pesticide-free environment. When I’m shopping for dairy, I always look for the “organic” label. And my small portions of meat come from grass-finished beef while my poultry is from free-range chickens.

There are still many discrepancies in food labeling policies. Sometimes smaller farms meet organic guidelines but can’t afford the cost to become officially USDA-certified as organic. As Michael Pollan states in In Defense of Food, “Many, if not most, of the small farms that supply farmers’ markets are organic in everything but name.” If you’re visiting a farm-stand, just ask whether the farmer is an organic grower.
